Prophecy can include both foretelling and forthtelling. While similar, it is important to understand the distinction between the two. Both play significant roles in conveying divine insight and bringing transformation.
Foretelling
Foretelling is when a prophetic word *predicts* the future. It provides a glimpse of what is to come through divine revelation. An example of foretelling in the Bible is found in the book of Isaiah:
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV):
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
In this verse, Isaiah prophesies the birth of Jesus Christ, an event that would occur centuries later. This prediction highlights the prophetic ability to foresee significant future events.
Forthtelling
Forthtelling is when the prophetic word *causes* the future. Declaring God’s message releases the empowering grace needed to the word to pass. An example of forthtelling can be seen in the book of 1 Kings:
1 Kings 17:13-14 (NIV):
Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.'”
Elijah’s declaration to the widow at Zarephath caused the miracle of provision. His words were not merely a prediction but a powerful declaration that brought God’s promise to fruition.
Conclusion
In summary, foretelling in prophetic ministry involves predicting future events, as seen in Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus. Forthtelling, on the other hand, is about declaring God’s current message to shape the future, exemplified by Elijah’s instruction to the widow. Foretelling can help us prepare for what is to come and recognize it’s significance, while forthtelling empowers us to experience a future that was not possible before the word was release. Both are valuable elements of prophetic ministry.
